The Sunshine Coast Women's motorcycle group was
founded by Helen Knight
from Maroochydore Queensland Australia in the year 2000.
I always had a passion for motorcycles and that passion came
alive in me
in 1999 when I obtained my 250cc license which had to be held
for 12
months before going for my open license. So after
being so extremely
excited that I could ride legally, I had some
thoughts about riding
with other women. I hadn't actually seen any other lady riders
on the
coast or knew of any so I decided to do something about it.
My mission was to start an all girls motorcycle group. I
visited all the
bike shops and made myself known to the owners and staff and
left
information at the counter stating that if any women were
interested in
riding with me, then to call.
So, girls started to call. The group began to grow.
It became a lot
of fun. And then there was 9...... What a fantastic
feeling to be
riding with ladies and thoroughly enjoying it.
In 2004 it was time for a change of name as Sunshine Coast Women's
Motorcycle group was a bit of a mouthful, so many
girls put their
thinking caps on and came up with some amazing names.
It was put to a
vote as there was too many to choose from and the most popular
name was
"Girl Torque" which so aptly applies to us. Women
with power.
Girl Torque hosts the annual Bras 'n Bikes run which supports
the Breast
Cancer Month in October of every year.
In 2008 we have in excess of 70 women registered (and growing) who are active
motorcycle riders and are of all ages, creed, and
preference of
machine. We enjoy social riding and get togethers. Many
special
friendships have developed out of this group and as it
continues to
grow, we will always welcome any new members.
It is an absolute privilege to know all these amazing women and
to ride
with them.
